Default 1971 tail light question

I would like to modify my 1971 tail lights so that both lights on the right and left side will work together. I presume that this could be accomplished by simply adding an additional inner right and inner left side light pigtail to the outer housings. I'm certain that several on here have made this upgrade. Could someone please give me a rough overview of " How To" on this upgrade. Pretty good on the mechanical end, not so much on electrical. Also, if I've got the right idea on this how do i remove the rear wire harness from the tail light housing. Thanks gang in advice. Keith.

Aren't your inner lights your back up lights? My '72 has clear lenses in the inner position. If you have a state inspection, you may need those in order to pass. Maybe check all bases before you go and make a permanent change.

That is a great point but I'm located in upstate Alabama and don't have to worry about any of that. I can always go back if need be.

Really not that tough-

Get an couple 1157 bulb sockets to mount on the inner housings-

I like this one- as you can rivet ( or use small bolts) it to the housing- rather than the clip/teeth one that won't hold worth a crap-

Then wire like this- the Light green wire is for the back up light-
So you'll have the dk green and brown wires - and a ground (black) going to the pigtail

Then do the same for the left side- yellow and brown wire- black as ground

See my '68 backup light question thread. This is my next project after my seat upgrade but I sill want backup lights even though we don't require safety inspection as long as you have historic plates.
