I started when I was 16 and stopped when I was 30, 21 years ago! At first I really missed the cig's (especially when out drinking) but after a couple of years that urge went away (so watch yourself!!)
Now I can't stand the smell of the damned things! I hold my breath when I walk by someone smoking because they smell so bad.
Good Luck!
I tried my best to smoke when I was a kid (my dad and both my brothers smoked), but I never developed a "taste" for it.
My dad didn't quit after his first two heart attacks, but after the third (and the bypass surgery that followed) he gave up his 45 year habit.
My oldest brother quit after his first heart attack. He flat lined for that, but they brought him back and put a couple of stents in.
My older brother hasn't "seen the light" yet even after four heart attacks and bypass surgery
FWIW, my dad never had (he died several years ago from something else) and my oldest brother hasn't had another (wood :smash: ) heart attack since quitting. In fact, after just a year, the cardiologist said my oldest brother's arteries were in better shape then when he had surgery.
VERY COOL!! This December 20 will be two years for me!! Keep up the good work! It's not easy, I can tell you.. Now I don't think about smoking at all any more.. That took about a year to get to that point were it's not on your mind. Hang in there, it's worth it!!!!
 It probably doesnt feel like it but the hard part is really over. I quit cold turkey while vacationing in Maui 7 or 8 years ago. The first 3 days were the worst for me. Congrats.
Re: OFF TOPIC....no more cigs for me :) (1970 Stingray)
I can't imagine paying $3-4.00 a pack today. In NY a couple weeks ago, I saw cigs for $5-6.00/pack!

try $7 to 7.50 per pack in manhattan.thanks bloomie.:smash:
i usually buy my winstons in queens or long island.i stopped smoking for a year and a half and then started again, but i know now that i can quit and i will try again.
good luck signguy
JEEZE!!! i cant even believe the support from all of you...i am deeply touched....thank you so much...it makes it so much easier when you know others are pulling for you...
the smoking was starting to get to me...i was really beginning to feel the difference in my breathing...
that coupled with the fact that we were finally defeated by the non smokers...
it was getting harder and harder to find a place to smoke anymore...
and recently it has been voted in here in Florida that as of jan 1 we will have nowhere public to smoke at all anymore...
not restaurants...not theme parks...nowhere...
it really has gotten to the point to where if you are smoking, you feel like some kind of lepper or something...
then there's the money...JEEPERS! i dont have to tell you what it costs for a moderate to heavy smoker to feed his habit anymore! YIKES!!!
so anyway...it is the end of day 5 now and i can safely say that i dont even miss them...i can already feel the difference in the quality of air i now get when i breath in deeply...
i am thinking less about them with every day and even when i do, i brush it off and move on...
for those of you that are wondering...i am doing this cold turkey...
it really is just a matter of controling your mind instead of allowing your mind to control you :) thats al it really amounts to...
as far as remembering the date goes...i quit Tuesday...the day we dropped the new motor in the vette :) ill probably always remember it that way :)
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN VERY MUCH FOR YOUR CONCERN AND SUPPORT...SG
Hey Signguy: I just found you on the map. We are practicially neighbors. Maybe I will drop in sometime. :)
ya...i noticed that the other day...JAX
that would be great! you are welcome to stop in anytime :)
i can tell you from recent experience that you are 300 miles away...
i can tell you that because a rollback car hauler getting $2 per mile gets $600 for a lift from there to here!
i can tell you that because last August while driving on the bypass around Jax on our way home from Carlisle i heard a terrible sound...knock knock knock
it was the sound of our crankshaft breaking in half!
you see...Jax was the very last place i ever drove my Corvette...
hense...the beginning of this whole motor building saga!
Great keep up the the good work. My wife and I quit 19 months ago and can't tell you how good I feel after smoking for 40 years. I can tell you that after looking and dreaming about owning a vette for 3 years. Two months ago we found a 78 we both liked and bought it CASH.
Signguy,
Congratulations from Down Under! In the state of Victoria, Australia, smoking is now banned in all restaurants, casinos and government buildings. I think a packet costs about $7-8 Australian, about US$5. If you saved that much every day for a year, you could afford to come to Australia for a holiday and have some spending money as well. Why not make that a goal for Christmas 2003? If you have a goal such as that, it makes it very difficult to succumb when tempted to light one up.

Congrats SignGuy on a great new beginning.
If that urge hits you hard, just come here and post. We will give you all the support we can, and you get to add to your post count at the same time.
Re: OFF TOPIC....no more cigs for me :) (Desertdawg)
Good for you...I stopped smoking and drinking about 7 years ago and feel better than ever. I did both for 20+ years. I figure I did it enough to last me a lifetime already. Keep up the good work

YOU CAN DO IT!
I've been smoke free since April 15th. I am so glad I don't have that dragging me down anymore.
Hang in there, you will have no regrets!
