Default Saddle interior "grain"

I'm in the interior phase of the restoration of my 70 coupe. The entire interior of this car was really dirty when I got it. Seemed like it had been kept open in some kind of shop that produced lots of crap in the air and a lot of it had gotten inside the car. The seats and dash were grimy. I cleaned them up to some degree when I first got it, but now it's time to really get it nice.

I'm doing the dash panels. I've used some really good cleaners on it, stuff that was recommended on an auto detailer site that the pros use. They've have done a really good job. But there's still part of the grain that doesn't seem to be cleaning up, and I started wondering if that is the way it's supposed to be. You can see in the pics that the valleys in the grain are darker in the dash pad. They do not appear to be that way on the map pocket though. The map pocket is laying on top of the panels in the pics. No matter how much I scrub, it won't clean out.

Is this the way it is supposed to be, or are these valleys just stained beyond help?

I had the same issue in my '74. After a lot of scrubbing and not making much progress I ended up buying the Corvette America interior dye (thru Zip) and I am very happy with the results.

Here you can see the undyed vs dyed. I think the dyed parts look much better.

And here is the whole dash after being dyed. The same dye works on the metal parts as well. I did the horn button and the column while I had them out. I have not gotten to the door panels yet.

Yeah, those look much better! Was the dye difficult to do?

What you are seeing in the grain is original for that years interior. It is not dirt there has been many photos and discussions about this unique finish.

Interesting. I'm not particularly fond of the look, I think Lamouree's looks better, but I don't hate it either. If it's original, and somewhat unique, I guess I should leave it.

Thanks for the info guys.
