The previous owner of my 72 convertible did an intake and carb swap. He installed a performer intake with a 1406 edelbrock carb. The air cleaner assembly he put on is to tall, even with a 2” filter in it, it makes contact with the hood. It’s a 14” open filter air cleaner. Does anyone have this same setup if so, what air cleaner are you using to avoid making contact with the hood?
Mel It looks like it's an aftermarket air cleaner. I ordered a factory drop down air cleaner base but the Edelbrock carb has a larger throat and the electric chock keeps it from fitting down over it.
I have a Weiand street warrior manifold (about a 1/4" lower than a performer EPS) with a 1906 Edelbrock on my '70, I couldn't get a definitive answer as to what air cleaner would fit so in the end I made my own (don't have the luxury of trialling different units here as the freight bill would quickly be huge). I had a Quickfuel carb previously (same dimensions as Holley 3310) and with that a drop base 13" air cleaner, this setup just barely fitted under the standard hood. As you have already found, unfortunately the electric choke sits quite high on the Eddy and also the accelerator pump arm/plunger can also get in the way. You might be able to dimple the base to clear these though.
Edelbrock makes a specific air cleaner for your model carb. Stand in front of the head lights and you will send the model number stamped on the end of the carb facing you. Give Edelbrock a call and they will advise on the correct air cleaner. Bubba used a incorrect air cleaner for my carb and the electric choke kept the bottom of air cleaner from setting level on the carb.
No way that would fit on my '70, I only had two inches of space between the carb intake and the bottom of the hood. Car came with a Torker 1 manifold and 13" drop base air cleaner and even then the air cleaner had to have a small nut holding the lid on as the std one for the aftermarket air cleaner would hit the hood.
I suggest the OP use some crumpled up aluminium foil between the top of the carb and the hood to determine the available space on their particular car and then work from there.

This is the biggest drop base I found. Using this, a 2" filter, and a K&N filter top fit perfectly with my bigblock. Air Cleaner
