Thanks for all the responses! I would like to drive it as often as possible, when I'm not on my Road Glide that is, and it may involve coming home after dark. I am going to call an Inspection garage in Collegeville and ask him what he would do. I will get back to y'all with the outcome. Thanks again and keep the ideas/real life stories coming.
Unfortunately, where I work no longer does emission inspections or I'd do it for you. Still have my e.i. and s.i. licenses though just in case we decide to buy the $7k machine to do them.
if you register the car as an antique- you do not have to have inspection or emission. Also, you do not have to send pictures in to the DMV anymore. simply request an antique plate.
Emissions inspections for cars newer than 1975 but more than 25 years old are only visual. All they do is check to ensure all equipment is there, no actual function test. unfortunately if your cat is gone you will fail. unless you are REALLY good friends with someone doing the inspection, I cannot imagine anyone putting a sticker on car without a converter.
I dont know how the cops are in your area, but around here nobody bats an eye at an antique plate. I drive my cars as much as I can in the good weather. I know if you read the pa sheets on the antique plate there are all these rules, I have never been stopped, nor do I know anyone who has been stopped, for violating an antique plate rule.
too many to read, but risking that I'm just repeating. I came to PA in 1984 with my 1980 vette with headers. No problem on inspections then. About 89 I pulled the headers and put on the original exhaust but with a "test pipe" in place of the cat. Inspected many times through 2004, including after Cumberland county became one of the emission check counties. By check them meant no check engine light on, all equipment appears to be operating. Despite no cat, the air pump belt off, and EGR port covered, no one ever failed it through 2004. Then the car sat until 2016. Registered it as a Classic restricted to 5,000 per year. Again, no problems with inspection at this point with the air pump removed. In theory, original equipment should be on and appear operational. In reality, most mechanics are younger than the car and don't have a clue what came on it 40 years ago. No guarantees, but "A" it's easy enough to put a couple hi-flo cats on if needed, and keeping the air pump on and just removing the belt along with pulling and plugging the vacuum line to the EGR between inspections is simple enough.
I’ve had a pa antique plate on my 73 for 6 years now with no problems.I drive it 8 months a year ,never been questioned about how many times a week it’s driven..
With my luck....... I'll be THAT GUY that gets dinged for every little infraction! I Think I will go for the antique tag and drive the ball bearings outta the thang! Thanks all! Keep hestories going tho......
