I replaced the linkage cable in my 1980 after a transmission rebuild. In doing so, I was hoping to replace the leather around the shift lever. The old one is pretty dry-rotted. It looks like the **** should unscrew and come off so the fabric could be replaced. I unscrewed the pushbutton, but I can't get the **** off. Is it supposed to unscrew? If it doesn't come apart, from rust or who knows it could be glued on there by the original owner, is the only option to replace the whole thing?
Do you replace the whole assembly? Anyone have an aftermarket one they like for any reason? Is there something that looks cooler like a Hurst shifter?
I’m pretty sure it screws off , my black 80 L82 could use a new boot too . They sell boots and ***** so it must come off and be serviceable , probably need some heat from hairdryer to loosen the Loc tite compound so you can unscrew it is my best guess
For the factory automatic transmission shifter, the push button and then the **** each should screw off. You may need to use penetrating oil if the **** is stuck.

The push button and shift **** should unscrew with some elbow grease. Perhaps try some lube, let it sit, then grip it with a rag to assist in removal. Good Luck!
