Default Found out the HARD Way

I found out the hard way what that noise I was getting on decleration which I asked you guys about a couple of weeks ago was. Well, it was the first round of qualifying for the "Streetwars" at our local track. I launched on a 125 shot of squeeze and didn't get to the 60' marker. The ring and pinion broke. I believe the pinion bearing was trying to tell me something (the noise) which caused a misalignment of the ring and pinion. I'll take the rear end out soon to see the actual carnage. I did manage a 8.05 (motor) and a 7.38 (125 shot) before it gave up. What have some of you paid for a rearend rebuild through some of the better vendors? (Tom's, etc.) By the way, this was a Florida Caliper prepared rearend. It did last three years of some pretty heavy abuse though.

Sorry to hear about the failure.
I suppose this means that the 7.99 will remain elusive to you for a while longer. Your so close that simply fasting for a day could darn near get you there! :D
Have you considering rebuilding the rearend yourself or is exchange your best option? I found that Tom's differential and Bair's had good service and prices on parts. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=193247

Nice to see you still around Nastee, I haven't seen you here much lately :seeya .

If yoiu were happy with FL Caliper, I"d probably return to them. The shipping cost I would think would be quite high. Also a bearing failure probably could have happened to anyone of the vendors ;) .

I have been getting some rear noise out of mine also. I am just hoping it is gear whine. Happens when coasting on acceleration there is no noise. What was the noise you were getting. Mine seems to be getting worse but I have been driving with the top up and the noise seems louder.

I got my original Richmond Gear 4.11 with the custom hardend $225 each yokes out of a place in Houston Texas. They were the company that did all the rear ends for MId America. So I called Mid America and got the number for the Houston company because I wanted some upgraded parts. It was before Tom's was ever heard of. It was like $1700 with the yokes without a core. Now I just buy the Tom's $700 posi units that break every 2-3 years. I have gone through 5 or more posi units, 5 motors, and 7+ transmissions and 100,000 miles in the last 12 years.

The most amazing thing is the 4.11 Richmand gears and custom yokes are still good.

Smoked Tires also has the top of the line Tom's:)

IMO - Before I would put $2000 in a stock iron rearend I would go the extra mile and get the Chevy 12 bolt IRS conversion. 427Vette did the Dana 60 conversion

Miker: Yes, the 7.99 will have to wait. I have a few more things to try. I tried the ole "take the air cleaner off" trick and slowed 2 tenths and 2 mph. I don't have the know how to rebuild the rear end myself. I'll remove it and either send it off or have it done locally.

Smoked tires: I've been around just not as much. I have a '94 S15 Jimmy I'm doing so I spend some time on the S10 Forum. As for Fl Caliper or whatever they are now, the rearend (3-4 years ago) was my first dealing with them. That was OK which led to my second dealing with them that turned into a diaster. I would NEVER deal with them again.

Gordonm: My noise was kind of a combo of whine and rub. ONLY on deceleration. It didn't change much just driving around town or even after the motor pass Sunday. But after the N2O pass in the shutdown it was much louder. I pretty much knew whatever was wrong would probably manifest itself on my next pass and I told my wife and some buds I thought something was going to break...and it did.

Gkull: that's alot of parts you've been through. At this point I don't know what route I will take to fix this problem. I do know I'm not going to spend alot to do it.

Hi Nastee,
I don't know if you remember me, but I live here in Ft Walton too. I have the charcoal gray '79. I've been studying alot for promotion, so no time for the Vette. I plan to send my trailing arms to Bair's in February or March and while I have the rearend out, I will check to see if it needs rebuilt. Anyway, it's good to see that you've been doing well-sorry about the rearend. Have you tried Maksymuk's? He specializes in driveshafts, but he will sometimes do rearends and trailing arms. He has a good reputation locally, but he's getting particular about what he will work on as he is getting older. He did tell me a few months ago that he would consider building my diff, and he did say that he use to do ALOT of Vettes. Hope this helps. By the way, Bair's sent me a video. They are in PA(I think). I've heard good things about them and the video looks like they are pretty upstanding dudes. Hope it works out for you....See ya on the road in March. By the way, are you going to Bowling Green next summer?
