The purpose of this thread is to report that BB car owners with Doug’s Headers can fairly easily install a Borgeson steering unit regarding clearance. I took my headers off to remove the old steering parts just to give myself more room. I was concerned the clearance with #3 cylinder but it went together just fine. Dougs headers fit really well on the block with no denting or dinging necessary.
One word of caution regarding the steering column and shaft collapsing. It does NOT work as easily as it shows in all the videos, instructions, etc. You need to be prepared to remove the column and then take it apart to get it to collapse. You will also need upper and lower bearings which are available from Zip Corvette. It’s not a 4-5hr job (at least not for me). This was the only snag I ran into during this project and I will test drive it soon.
My car is a 1968 w/ 454 Big Block. #3 is tight but manageable. New drag link and no more leaking control valve. From underneath.
I am running into this same problem. 68 BB 427 Telescoping Steering column with Borgeson. This is frame off restoration, so when collapsing the column the lower bearing gave out and the whole shaft became loose. I'm now replacing the lower bearing, but once I put it back together, how did you compress yours?
I had to take the column out and collapse it. My bearings also gave out and I had to replace them as well. If I had it to go over again, I would have just bought a tilt column from Ididit and shortened theirs and that way I would have had a better column with tilt and I could have done it at the same time.
Did you use the hammer/mallet method hitting the end of the shaft to shorten it? When I called IDIDIT, they said I could order that specific length model already shortened for 68 with Borgeson. If I ordered from Summit/CorvetteCentral?TopFlight, either he said they were not the correct length or were not collapsible, I may need to call again and ask. But he said 10 weeks for order to shipping timeframe.
