Default 1968 Ididit column with Borgeson steering

A few weeks ago I posted a thread asking if anyone had installed an Ididit column in a 68 with a Borgeson steering box. I didn’t get any responses so apparently no one else has taken on this project. I was able to get mine in and ended up reducing the overall length of the column by 3”. If you have never done such a thing before, it’s one heck of a job but after doing mine I could probably do it again in about half the time.

The whole tilt steering column stuff started when I installed C6 seats in my car and realized I definitely need tilt steering. I didn’t want to get a column from another C3 because I wanted to keep the ignition on the dash and also didn’t want to add a rewiring project into the mix.

Bottom line is that you can shorten an Ididit column but it’s a heck of a job for a weekender like me. I’m very happy with the results and it looks great.

If you are interested in doing this project with your car, contact Ididit tech team and they can tell you how to shorten the column.

Thanks for the info Ron.

Shortening the stock column is fairly easy as it collapses.

From your comments do I assume it needs some major disassembly to be shortened

Yeah you have to take it apart to get it shortened.

Ron,
I'm looking at the same modification and I'm trying to figure out what to tell the folks at Ididit about modifying the column. Did you just cut 3" off the length of the outer tube? How much did you shorten the shaft? They said that the shaft only sticks out of the tube by 1.5" on the retrofit column so I'm curious what you had to do to the one you bought.

I shortened the outer tube 3”. Once you get the Ididit column apart you will see that the shaft inside can collapse much like the original steering was designed. It’s held together with a roll pin which is easily removed. After you trim the outer tube you can take a measurement for the shaft and make it the length you want it to be.

The best way to determine the length that you need is to lay the old column down next to the new Ididit column and make them match up. This is how I did mine.

Read over this link too, it will help you. https://epasperformance.com/pages/id...assembly-notes

Do you have a part number for the column? I'm interested in doing this but prefer to make it as easy as possible.

I'm curious what part number @Ron1968 bought - the folks at Ididit say that the 68 retrofit column (p/n 1120700051) measures 35 7/8" instead of the 37" that someone here said the stock column is before collapsing. They also said they can't put the retrofit column brackets on the 35" universal column because the Corvette tube size is smaller.

I ordered part 1120700051 from IDIDIT. My column was already shortened because I installed a Borgeson steering box earlier.

Thanks @Ron1968 - I sent the guy at Ididit a request for a quote for a shortened retrofit column... i'll let everyone know what he says.

Hmm, didn’t see the request. We put one in my brothers 68. The column fit perfect. The lower trim panel fitment sucks though.

If I remember correctly, I ordered the same one.

also, the connector on the universal is flat and the one on the Corvette is round. I cut and spliced my old connector onto this one but to save yourself time and headache, there is an adapter available.
