You will want to pull the cluster to properly install a new cable if that turns out to be the problem.
If the cable is not the problem then it is either in the speedo or the tranny (niether of which is likely) nor easy to repair.
The speedo cluster can be removed without removing the whole of the dash - you will want to lower the steering column to make its removal easier. Take out the several screws that hold the cluster in place and pull towards you in the driver seat - if the column is lowered it wioll come out easier. You will only be able to go so far before the speedo cable will prevent further motion - as well as the wiring harness - both are easy to disconnect from the cluster.
you just reach up under your dash (it helps if your double jointed)and find the back of the speedo and grab the cable end there...on mine you give the clip a little squeeze and the cable will pop right out in your hand...
you can pull the inner cable out of the cable housing and see if it looks broken or messed up...it probably will :yesnod:
the new cable will come with the inner and the outer...
just push yours out thru the firewall and follow it down to the tranny and take it off there too...
replacing it is just doing it all again in reverse! :yesnod:
mine came dry...no lube inside it at all...
i pulled my inner cable out and coated it with white grease before installing it.
