The last thing on the list after a transmission rebuild was replacing the shifter cable. I got it all back together and working, but I have a question. Here is a picture of the transmission end.
I think there should be a washer between the cable and the cotter pin (the little spring one may have a different name). I seem to remember there being a washer when I took it apart, but I can't remember for sure. I can't find one anywhere.
If there is supposed to be one, what size should it be? The cotter pin seems flimsy to me and I don't want it to break when I'm shifting one day. Am I doing something wrong here? Should I be worried?
Yes, there should be a washer between the linkage and cotter pin. That clip doesn't look very good, why not remove it and put a heavier cotter pin in there ?

That's basically what I'm trying to figure out. I put that pin in because that's what was there before. it may or may not be what GM put on it originally. I'm trying to figure out what to use now. Looking for suggestions.
I think mine had the original clip also but I didn't like that setup, I would put as large of a cotter pin that will fit in there so no chance of falling out, sorta like this:
