When I bought my '76 a year or so ago, it had an almost new Edelbrock carb on it.(Funny thing, the castings have all got "Weber" on them).
Anyway, if I lift my foot slowly off the gas pedal, it doesn't quite come all the way back, and the idle can sit as high as 1,000 RPM.
I thought the springs might be too weak, but they're fine, and the cable and pedal are free and move easily. I finally realised that the carb itself, as it comes back to idle position has a couple of little sticking points that sound more like metal on plastic or hard rubber than they do metal on metal. I've oiled all the linkage points on the carb, the accelerator pump plunger, and even the throttle shaft.
Has anybody else ever had this problem?
Does it have an electric carb? If so, just be aware its supposed to operate slightly differently during the warmup period.
The carb says weber because the molds have been bought and sold a number of times... It was also known as a carter carb as well before edelbrock started making them.

Yes, it has an electric choke.
I'll disconnect it and see if that makes any difference.

take the carb off and look at the butterflies and where they close in the barrel. You may see some shiny spots where the plate is making contact with tthe sides of the barrel in the bottom throttle plate. I had that issue and it took some adjustment and some emory cloth to smooth out the interference. First try and loosen the 2 screws that hold the disc on the shaft and center it so it doesnt drag on the sides. IF that doesn clear it up use the emory cloth to clean up the contact patch. Dont take off too much , just enough to free up the sticking
Your fast idle cam on the choke may be hanging up......disconnecting the choke will do nothing.....adjust the choke housing so the flap is all the way open and test.
