I am in the middle of the LS1/4L60E upgrade in my '75 and part of the project is the Borgeson conversion. What is the best way to get the initial setup close? I found the center of the borgeson box by turning it back and forth and taking the middle of that, and with the pitman arm aligns nicely with the front tires pointing straight forward, but the joint that connects the steering wheel to the rag joint is about 90 degrees out (relative to the steering wheel) if I align the flat spot on the column to the rag joint set screw. Do I not worry about the rag joint on the column and put it on so the set screw is not on the flat surface? Do I not worry about it and take it to the guy that will align it for me for $120?
I have subsequently found this thread and it seems the place to make the adjustment between the rag joint and the column, set screw on the flat area be damned! That seems to be the only thing that makes sense.
You should not have to BEAT the rag joint on the shaft with a hammer !!!! Give the splines a real good clean up and it should slide on. Drill a small depression for the grub screw to sit in .
After its all done , if your happy with it put some locktite on the grub screw .
I was able to get it all together I think pretty close to what will be the final alignment. The rag joint set screw is about 90 degrees out from the flat spot on the column shaft, but the steering wheel is straight forward and I am at the center of the box and the wheels are straight forward so I should be close. I cleaned up the splines with a wire brush and gently tapped it with a block of wood to get it in place.
