It is there to prevent the rubber tipped valve from sticking onto the seat. If you use the car regularly, you don't need the clip at all. If it sits for some significant lengths of time, the clip can be helpful, as the float will lift the needle valve off the seat when the fuel in carb bowl drops (evaporates).
The downside of using the clip is that it can be installed incorrectly (hanger in a hole on the float arm
) which can cause significant fuel flow & flooding issues.

Correctly installed, the hanger goes on the half-circle bump.

7T1 is correct. I made the mistake of removing the clip on my original 7029215 carb. 69 427/390. After sitting for a couple of weeks the needle will bond itself to the seat when the bowl dries up. No start and you have to put fuel down the vent tube to release the needle as the fuel pump will not overcome it. The clip is there for a reason and the above pic is correct. Install the clip between the two holes and not in one of them.

WHY, didn't they just do the larger seat to start with??
Production changes are expensive and I think that small fuel hole would have been what was needed from the beginning.
And Yes I love the Q,jet as I think it was the BEST carb made. Proper adjustments will make it awesome.
