Weak HEI Spark (Chevy 454)

Hey Folks, the subject 454 ignition is still sufficiently outputting spark . I may be taking it back out on the road next month, and had a question (thought I'd hit up my wiser colleagues here.) Having had the bad experience of the ignition dying on the Interstate, I've leisurely collected spare ignition parts to have along (ie module, coil , pick up coil etc) . (for reference this is a '82 Chevy 454). I was recently having lunch with a mechanic friend of mine and recounting my story, he told me I couldn't replace the pick-up coil on the side of the road, because the gear has to be removed (in order to remove the pick up coil) and pressed back on . My thought was to buy a used distributor (with known good pick up coil) and keep that with the spare parts to make a road side replacement of a bad pick-up coil possible. My question is how interchangeable are these things? Will any 454 distributor fit any 454? This is just for the spare parts box, so I don't care to spend mega bucks. Any inputs would be great.
