Finally did it!!! Ordered a 383 crate engine
The 355 I ordered from AR came into Houston yesterday afternoon. I got it home tonight and have it semi-uncrated. It appears to be everything they represented with dart iron eagle ported/polished heads and the picture below does not do justice to how it really looks. Mark(AR) and I had a few misunderstandings about the shipping, but I take some of the credit for those. It's a great looking engine that hopefully runs just as well as it looks. It appears they take alot of pride in their engine work although they do need some hints on crating. The engine came in undamaged and they made sure to let me know that all I had to do was not accept it if there was a problem. You can't get any better than that.
Plus... where can you find a 355/427HP dart head engine with comp 522/520 cam, crane rockers, keith black 9.8:1 pistons, pink rods, nodular crank, childs & albert rings, ARP, clevite bearings, comp moly pushrods & lifters, cloyes true roller and dynamically balanced & assembled ready for your intake(& other necessities) for $2495? Not saying they have more at that price, but guessing it never hurts to call them if some of you might be interested in one of their engines.
My first impression after seeing the engine is you can't go wrong. By the way... I will start dismantling the engine the weekend before New Years. If you would like to stop by and shoot the breeze toss me an e-mail to home or work.

I can't wait to hear about the engine running... I was initially thinking in getting one of those 2-bolt 355/427 HP engines... but finally decided to spend $700 more to get the more radical engine... I hope that you'll be as happy with your engine as I'm with mine... BTW - I got my shift light today... This should help me to take some tenths of my ET by shifting at the right RPM...
What intake are you planning on putting on?? I would recommend a single plane Torker I or Torker II... Those are very cool intakes... I personally don't like dual plane intakes too much.. but that's only personal preference... I like racing - and I haven't seen to many racecars with dual plane intakes...

I reposted a better pic in the post above.... didn't have my flash on at the time. Does the engine some better justice. Plans are to go with the Weiand 7530 intake and port/polish it myself. Carb... 750 Holley vacuum secondary... & I will probably go with Accel distributor & Crane electronics behind that. Christmas has put many of the accessories on hold, but January will be a big toy store splurge.

You... mpro72vette... & tshort are going with a bit more radical setups than I chose. I e-mailed Holley, Summit and a couple of others and the concensous for my application was to go vacuum secondary. The intent was never to beat down the elapsed time at the drag strip that I cannot just cruise this thing around. Then again... I do have plans to see if I can take this 15-16 second 195HP vette into the high 12's or low 13's with this engine. It will take some work with the suspension to get there, but I think I have something to start with that can only improve... or break other stuff.

I have no doubt that you'll be in the 12's with your engine... You should be in the lower 300's for RWHP... which should be enough for upper 12's...

Please get rid of your glass fuel filter. They look nice, but they are a fire hazzard and they won't pass a NHRA tech. inspection if you ever take your car to a drag strip

Olivier - Mark told me they used the Holley Avenger 670 to dyno my engine. Not sure about what intake, I assume the same one they are selling with it. He also suggested that carb to me and said my carb would push "too" much air through and kill the lower end torque. (I've got a Speed Demon 750 vac sec) That didn't sound very right to me so I emailed Lars and he has tuned my carb on a very similar engine and knows almost for a fact that my carb should run better. So I'm going with Lars on this one. But if he ever gets one of those in the loaner program I'd like to try it out to confirm.

It's been awhile since I toyed with a hopped up small block. What kind(if any) break-in period did you go through before every throttle position & RPM range were taken advantage of? I know when we freshened up my 468 in the strip car we'd oil prime the engine... crank it up and set the timing... warm it up to operating range... shut it down and retorque everything & recheck the valve settings... go through that whole process one more time... and then anything was fair game. Break-in period ends! :)
