Default Diff fluid... too full?

Does any know what the proper fill level is for a differential on a 79? I filled mine while i had the right (passenger) side jacked up about 7 inches in the air. The passenger side is the same side as the fill hole, so i could put more fluid in than i could if the car was level. Is it possible that I filled it too much? Can this cause any damage?

The specification is something like 3/8" below the opening which is damned near impossible to measure. I just filled mine to overflowing (parked on level ground) and it's been fine so far.

It may push some oil out of the vent but it won't cause any harm as long as you don't significantly overfill it (like tip it on the side and completely fill the case). You run into problems when you overfill things like the engine oil or automatic transmission since these rely on a pick up to feed a pump.
