Default Rear Differential-Side Yoke

So tell me what I need to hear and already know. I took my differential out a few weeks back because it was leaking at the front. Took it to a Transmission shop to have the seal replaced. I’m just finishing putting it in and noticed the sliding out of the side yoke. Or at least I’m pretty sure it is sliding out. See pictures below.

I’m pretty sure I have to take it all back out and back to the shop. What do you guys think?

If your shop disassembled the rear (removed the posi) in their efforts to replace the front seal, it’s likely they either forgot to install the clip that holds the axle or they did a poor job of attempting to reinstall the clip and it has popped off.

If they did not remove the posi, then you could have a badly worn axle.

In any event, the cover needs to come off and determine the state of the clips.

The differential came out faster the second time around, just 40 minutes. The drivers side yoke slipped right out. I’m taking it back to the transmission guy tomorrow to let him fix it. The side yoke looks okay to me, but what do I know. I’m going to assume the clip was not put on correctly. Anyone have any thoughts?

I have some thoughts, some good and some not.

Was the differential rebuilt or just repaired- meaning just seals installed? I see common aftermarket seals in place so the axles were out at some point. Now if a person doesn't know how to install a snap- ring once will they be able to do it a second time?
The end of the axles appears to be worn a little. I would remove the cover, find the snap ring and install on the axle out of the diff and measure from the ring to face to see how much it is worn. If it's past the case hardening it will continue to wear at every corner you take. I would ask your mechanic if he knows what the spec and hardness is, if you don't get a clear answer - sailor take warning.
