Trying to replace my tail shaft seal. I have it off but its much thicker than the one I took out and loose to the first level of the hole. Its it supposed to be this thick and do I just need to pound it all the way into the second level of the hole which is narrower. Or do I have the wrong replacement seal? Pretty sure the new one is wrong, its 2.70" and the one I took out is 2.75". Ordered another one for pickup at 2.75"
The one I took out had some sealant around the inside that I removed also. I'm pretty sure these go in oiled but no additional gasket type sealant of any type?
If you are at this point you should replace the bushing. Not that hard, kind of. Did you check the play and wear on the yoke? Check the seal against the yoke. And yes it needs to be pounded in until the lip is flush.

if I could figure out where to get the removal tool I would but they seem hard to find. Don't want to remove the tailshaft to get to it. The yoke has some wear but doesn't look excessive.
After going through what you are going through I decided to just push the old bushing into the tail shaft. There are references to doing this on line. Hasn't hurt a thing. New bushing, yoke and seal, then you would never have to address the rear of the trans again.
