I have had good luck with Standard Motor Products ignition parts and rockauto usually has good prices on them. I run the SMP UC12X coils on my points distributors. DR31 is their Blue Streak HEI heavy duty coil.

Read this and use a multimeter to test some things. If you have a problem it should show up.

Coil specs are .5 ohms (thats 1/2 ohm)on the primary, and about 9k to 11k ohms on the secondary. The ohms test will only tell you if a part is bad. If a coil has arcing in the secondary, it will pass the test, but it will act up when hot. Buy a name brand module. Standard, Borg Warner, Napa, Delco are the names that I would recommend. One other thing, the color of the coil lead should match the pick up coil leads. So if the pick up has a white lead, then the coil must have a red and white lead. If the pick up has a yellow lead, then the coil must have red and yellow leads.

It was the coil. I used a new MSD ignition coil.

Hope it stays this way for a while...

over the years HEI has had me scratching my head more than once.
bad ICMs
bad coil
bad reluctor wheel pickup.

and of course heat was the culprit that made it hard to pinpoint.

When hot the device would be flaky.
Trouble is proper testing when hot,

anywho, the reluctor change was the hardest.
