That's awesome! I run a surge tank on mine, but it's small (probably a bit under 1 litre?) and I find that on a windy hillclimb track I can starve it if the main tank is too low. I had been thinking I would eventually get a bigger surge tank, but yours is a very neat solution. I'll be curious if you can run it right down near empty on an autocross course? I find it's the continuous g forces back and forth that starve mine - I'll get about 20-30 seconds into a run and then it will cut out.

I autocrossed yesterday with the Porsche Club. I started with 1/4 tank, and we usually get six to eight runs. Yesterday, we got eleven runs! The car was fine for the morning sessions five runs. But for the afternoon’s six runs, the car started stumbling at one point in the course! It got worse each lap. The point was right after some high g braking, a right, then a left, then a slalom. Pretty extreme yanking and banking for less than 1/4 tank, but it was fine at 1/4 tank. I guess I need to race with the tank 1/2 full. It, I used to have this stumbling while racing regardless of fuel level. Now I’m good above 1/4 tank!!!!
Ah, interesting! I can run mine down below a quarter of a tank, but when I get to about 1/8 is when I find I can have issues. Sounds like yours is pretty similar. How much capacity do you think the sump has? Yours does have the advantage of simplicity - no low pressure fuel pump, separate tank etc. I like it.
I thought about something similar when I did a elec fuel pump in a Jag XJS last summer.
It had a really cool baffle around the fuel pump in the bottom of the tank. And the the tank was similar in shape to ours.
The baffle looked like an oversized coffee can, maybe 8" dia. and at least 4-5" high.
And I believe it only had one hole in the lower front to feed it from the rest of the tank.
Almost the same as what BeeJay did.!
Great engineering job BeeJay!
Didn't I tell you years ago the car is finished? Actually front coil overs have crossed my mind. You autocrosssing with us Saturday?
Finished!?! Yeah, right.....
I'm glad to hear that the fuel sump is doing it's job. Fuel starvation is no fun.
I was busy this past weekend and didn't make it out, but I'll be out on the 26th. I should be running new wheels & tires for a bit more grip. Also, with a little luck, I'll have my control arms mods done and have the front coilovers on too. We'll just have to see how long I spend on mods for the wheels/tires.
I also needed to insure fuel delivery for my LS. Didn't like the idea of the fuel lines so close to the rear of the car, in case of getting hit in the back.
I went with a Surge tank instead of a sump. I suspect that a surge tank will likely keep your fuel going until it's almost empty. They can be built into the existing fuel tank or external, as in my build. It does require an extra very low power fuel pump to keep it completely topped off all the time. No need to weld the tank either. I still retain the rubber liner.
