Default 1980 Luggage rack

Hello All,

I need to replace my luggage rack and would like to see if anyone knows where the rack that I currently have installed may have come from. You can see in the pic that the unit I have installed has a curvature around the gas lid to allow me to open the gas cap. I bought the unit that Ecklers sells but the bars are all straight and the gas lid cover is too wide to open past the bars. I've looked all over but can't find the luggage rack I have currently installed on the car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jose

You can see the center bars are curved to accommodate lifting the gas lid

You have a custom car, 1980 convertible. The rack may have been custom made. Can you contact the original owner?

How is the condition if the two curved bars? Can you take them off your old rack a reuse them? I know my rack can be taken apart to the individual rails.
The rack on my '71 doesn't have curved rails next to the gas cap. Two things. Either the gas door on an '80's Vette is larger or your current rack has the rails closer together. I can measure both for you if needed.

That back upper panel is custom. The gas door has been moved. That being said, the original tank was probably replaced with a 77 or earlier.

Thanks Guys. I did think of changing the two curved bars but they are plastic coated and the replacement rack is not so I'm thinking of just taking the rack I currently have and getting a new custom one made at a shop. The current rack is not in terrible shape just has some rust starting on the bottom but should be good enough to use as a template. I appreciate the input!

Since it is all Custom made If it were mine I would put some work into the Rack you all ready have. To have a new Rack made it will need to be tack welded in place and that might just turn into a disaster with a painted car. I always liked the 80-82's when made into a Convertible. A local guy who parts out C3's tells me he still gets requests for all the parts to do the conversion.

I'm trying to understand why you just dont get your rack rechromed? certainly if you have a new one fabed up. it too will have to be chromed.

I agree, especially if the "rack is not in terrible shape just has some rust starting on the bottom", as you state.

As MelWff points out, you have a custom built car. The last C3 Corvette convertible was produced by GM in 1975. The ones after 75 are all modified coupes converted by others. It’s unclear how many were done. https://corvettestory.com/1975-Corve...wer-engine.php

The rear deck on your car has a non standard, later model gas lid. And that’s why your luggage rack was modified to allow the lid to open properly. Your luggage rack is truly a custom one-off.

Perhaps there are three choices to consider. Re-chrome the luggage rack. Remove it and fill the holes. Or have the proper gas lid installed and purchase a new luggage rack. None are fun choices but the re-chrome is by far the easiest.

Good luck – the car looks great
