Default I need some new key!

I don't have keys for either door lock or the behind the seat glove box. I do have the ignition key. The key that I have doesn't work on the doors or glove box. I have 2 C blank keys coming. I plan on trying to impression the new keys. Are the door keys supposed to be the same as the glove box key? Are the door keys 4 tumbler or 5 tumbler? This is on a 1968 which is different than the later cars. I think the ignition key is supposed to fit the doors. I am thinking the ignition switch has been changed.

I really don’t have an answer to your question but there’s a 68 Corvette Owners Group on Facebook. I’m sure they would know. It’s a very knowledgeable group. Not sure if your on Facebook or not.

My '68 ignition key is "Ignition only".
I had 3 extra Ignition keys made from vendor blanks.
The door keys fit everything else in the car...so I had three extra keys made for that.
Of course it may be different for original cars.

That's what I was hoping. I have the glove box lock out so I can make a key from that,,,, then hope it fits the doors.
Are those keys GM c blanks?

Yep...I bought them years ago from a Forum Vendor.
Another Forum member sent me to a locksmith who could repair a Corvette tumbler blindfolded!

According to Paragon, the C key is for ignition and door. The keys in the picture are not 68 keys.

But the key in the picture is a C key. Hex head. For the 68 the ignition and door lock both should be the hex head, C key, but I'm not sure they were the same cut. I read that the glove box is supposed to be a D key. What is confusing, the C key I have for the ignition will slide into the glove box lock. Is the C and D the same except for the shape of the head?

I was going from memory
My '69 Camaro original keys looked much like the pic, but we are dealing with a Vette.
Thanks for pointing out my error.

In looking very close at the C and D key shaft, the shafts are different. I will assume from that, the tumblers in the locks are different between the glove box and the doors/ignition keys. I was wondering because I have the glove box lock removed from the car and wanted to make a key from that. Now I have to use the actual door locks to try and make a new key.

kodpkd,
For 1968, the ignition and door keys were a hex shape with a "C" rail code. The glove box and spare tire keys were a tear drop shape with a "D" rail code. If you have the glove box lock removed, it is very easy to remove the cylinder from the case and find the key number stamped on the cylinder. Any locksmith can do this or you can easily do it yourself. With the key number a new key can easily be made. Of course, if the lock has ever been re-keyed in the past the stamped number will be useless. To remove the cylinder from the case look in one of the 2 slots in the case and you will see a brass colored tab at the very top. This retaining tab is spring loaded. With a small tool, depress the tab and the cylinder will come out. If you don't have a key in the cylinder, be very careful that the tumblers don't go flying out. The stamped numbers will be at the top of the cylinder. The format for the number will be "Number/letter/number/number" (8B21 as an example). Any locksmith can make a new key from this number. Hope this helps.
Jeff

I wasn't as clear as I should have been. What I need is a key to fit my doors. I wanted to use the glove box lock to make a key that I thought would fit my doors. Now I know the glove box key doesn't fit the doors so I have to try to use the door locks to impression a key. I'm not going to remove the door locks to do the impressions. Wish me luck.

It's a Briggs & Stratton octagon key with the letter C stamped on it. No other numbers. The center is knocked out.

Hello. My 69 also has a Briggs & Stratton key. With mine that key activates / deactivates the alarm, and I believe that's the only use for that key. Never really knew why it's a Briggs & Stratton key, thought they were basically small engines?

The 68 only has two keys, C and D. The C is for the ignition and doors. The D is for the glove box.
And nobody said anything about needing newkey.

So I did get 2 new C key blanks. I tried making a new door key using the impressioning method I saw online. It didn't work. I used a set of small files and just filed the new blank to match the old C key I found. At least I have a few door keys now.
I guess doorkey is better than newkey.

I just confirmed on my 68, C key (hex head) fits ignition and doors. D key fits (round-ish) head fits glove box.
