Default EFI Conversion

My 73 L82 quadrajet took a crap on me and is flooding, car cranks but won’t start gas is visible pooling on the manifold. Ughhh.
I was about to take the car to the exhaust fab shop to have headers and new magnaflow exhaust installed.

My question is, should I tow the car to my mechanic first and have an EFI installed? Which EFI is better?

It will cost at least a $1000, if not $2000, to have a FI installed by someone. there are a billion past threads on pros/cons of each system and how to DIY install.

I personally have the fitech on another car but lots of people swear by the holley system.

If the car is not a frequent driver then possibly just putting a gasket kit in the Qjet will get you going

Lots of threads on here about EFI conversion. my thread, 77 EFI Conversion, is how I did it with a Summit MAX500 system and a bunch of put together DIY parts. works great. Google Corvette EFI Conversion, most leads will bring you back to this forum. well worth doing in my humble opinion.

I've been looking at FiTech as well, but haven't made a decision yet. I'm getting to the point where I just want to be able to hop in the car a drive it vs tinkering with it. I have an old 750 double pumper that I have rebuilt once and might just go the TBI route here next time.

I have a Sniper on my ‘64 and love it. The PO installed a FAST EZ EFI on my ‘69. It used the FAST external pump and regulator with the old 5/16” return used as the return line from the regulator. The external pump was loud and the regulator would jam up when it got really hot and pressure would drop to zero. I replaced the external pump/regulator set up with the Holley in tank pump/regulator/hydramat set up and it is now perfect. I also bought the larger color monitor/controller for the EFI. This has made a world of difference on the ‘69 and it is very reliable and a blast to drive. I’ve also installed the FiTech in the past. Tops for me is currently the Sniper with the in tank pump/regulator, but this field is growing and innovating. There will be a new mousetrap tomorrow. With the Sniper and in tank module, the hardest past of the install is the wiring and frankly that is pretty straight forward. Your ‘73 has the same tank as my ‘69, so here are some pictures on the changes required to install the pump in the tank.

I drove around to lower the fuel level, but still needed a container to drain the tank.

The external pump sat right above the passenger side muffler and had a insulation lined protective cover installed.

Here it is with the cover removed. Even with the rubber isolation mounts, the pump was still loud enough to be heard over the engine music.

Here is the old pick up and fuel sender with an external filter still attached.

Here is the new pump with built in regulator and return. The hydramat clips to the intake on the left and only fits one way. It acts as a baffle by maintaining fuel at the pump intake.

This is the new color display/controller for the FAST EZ EFI. It plugs right into the harness.

All done, new o-ring and locking ring came with the tank module.

Im just going to throw my two pence in. I opted for a Sniper kit, a lot of money later it's installed but i'm struggling to get it to run right, always something playing up. In contrast I bought a 79 K10 pickup for work with a 350/holley carb and it fires right up everytime and hasn't let me down so far. I had zero prior experience with carbs and assumed EFI was the future but driving the k10 has made me realise I should have stayed with a carb on the vette.

Of course, being a very old ET here, I have put DPFI on 3 cars......and two versions on my '72 350 vette.....

started in '96 with L98 injection, went to a modified LT manifold with HEI up top the way God intended....

and I also put DPFI on a Pontiac 462......published in Feb '95 HPP mag......

my '72 gets 24 mpg.....sets in garage more than driven, but it's my only car now.....age 77.....
