Default Need new tires

I going to 17” rims with correct backspacing, would 225/60/17 or 235/55/17 be a better fit. I would prefer 235/55 for the width. I am worried about clearance. Also what would be a good performance tire?

255/50/17 Riken Raptor.
No clearance problems at all. Riken tires is a division of Michelin. A reasonably priced performance tire. https://www.moderntiredealer.com/art...rformance-tire

If the ‘72 clearance is the same as a ‘79 I will take the advice. Those look great.

They're the same. Here's a photo I found of a 79 with the same size wheels I have (torque thrust II), only they're the polished version.

I've had great luck with Firestone Indy tires 235/55/17. They stick really well, wear well if you arent spinning them, but if you like loud smoky burnouts these are NOT the tire for you . They dont really squeal and dont smoke. Because of the soft sticky compound they just pil up. THey also have a great price!!!

You have to pay attention to suggested rim width for tire width. I've used 17 inch since they came out. I tried 255/50/17 and in my 79 because of the 27 inch diameter rubbed at lock and lock on the steering. 255/45/17 and slightly smaller diameter don't have the problem. My first 17 inch rears were 285's on 11 inch wheels

I have 17 inch Torq Thrust polished wheels, with factory correct backspacing, and Nitto G555 tires. No rubbing on my 77. These tires have the exact same outside diameter, and tread width as the 255/60/R15 that were a factory option on the late model C3 Corvettes. Too bad you are not closer as I am about ready to sell the wheels and tires and go back to my factory 15 inch YJ8 wheels and tires. The wheels were bought new and tires have about 2000 miles on them.
