Temperature Gauge
I’m restoring the interior of my base 1972 convertible. With the center gauge cluster out to replace the clock and lens, I’m cleaning off the other gauges. I noticed the temperature gauge spins freely. While it worked before I took everything apart, this seems odd to me. Is it supposed to spin freely? With everything out, I’d rather replace it now than put it all together and have the temperature gauge not work.

Hello Dave Mak. I have the working gauge out of my 69, same gauge I believe. When it is disconnected from all wiring the needle can be moved to any location on the gauge and stays at that point, slight resistance when moving the needle, just enough to keep it in one spot. The needle doesn't spin freely. That's with no wiring hooked up, I don't know if that makes a difference. Take care.
