Tried to install line lock on 8T1 Vette yesterday......Noticed the front brake lines split at the proportioning block. Does this year Vette allow line lock install?......After we had it all hooked up.....The Line Lock body leaked like a sieve......Not the lines....The Body..........So disconnected and ordered a new unit from Jeg's.....Seems the Biondo unit I ordered from Summit is low quality.....It leaked around the body.....I'm hooking it up at the master cylinder front out port....down to the in port at the proportioning block....at the block the front lines split...Hope I'm doing this correctly.....Thanks in advance for any help with this...... :seeya Cappy
Re: Line Lock 1981 Corvette? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
That is unbelievable.........Oliver(grandsport68 ) had the same problem with the exact same linelock....I am looking to install one myself in the near future...But waiting to find a good quality unit
i installed my line lock. wasnt to difficult. Just cut the line that goes into the front of the master cylinder and flaired the ends. then installed the line lock right between the line. hardest part was finding the right brass fittings to put on the line lock itself.
Re: Line Lock 1981 Corvette? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
My linelock leaked at the body for 4 - 5 days.. and then it stopped leaking.. The reason is that there are 2 o-ring seals inside... They get compressed from sitting in there.. When they get in contact with the brake fluid - they start expanding.. and after a little while they seal perfectly...
Re: Line Lock 1981 Corvette? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
My TCI roll control worked fine. Instead of cut and flare just buy a 6 inch flared tube from Autozone. I just ran the wires into a spare unused fuse and installed a 15 amp. At the same time I also bought a Vacuum bleeder for $26 and sucked out all the old and put in new synthetic.
Re: Line Lock 1981 Corvette? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
The brake light will come on every time you use the line lock when it is installed between the proportioning valve and the master cylinder. It wouldn't go on if you installed it between the proportioning valve and the brakes, but it should still work the same.
Olivier,
Too late, I already ordered the Jegs model.......I'm still curious about the two lines coming off the proportioning block going to the front brakes.....I hope this is not ABS or split diagonal brake system.....Any body know what system we have on 1981 Vettes?.....According to Jegs....Their line lock will not work with ABS or Split Diagonal Systems.....Somebody chime in if they think I'm going to have no brakes at the end of the quarter mile.... :seeya Cappy
Ben,
I'm hooking up at the out port on the master cyclinder....with the line going down to the in port on the proportioning block.....I guess I'll have a red light showing.....What will I have to do to clear the red light?.....Tying in at the proportioning block will be a major PITA....since there are two lines out of the proportioning block going to each brake up front......I would have to T in......Looks spooky to me....At the master cylinder it looks much easier....But then much easier on these cars will never happen......I went out Saturday to install the line lock......put key in drivers door...unlocked door....press handle down....door no open....door latch mechanism broke inside door....so no problem I go around to passenger side....try to open door from inside....NADA....Sooooooo guess what I was doing all day Saturday.....Yep....trying to remove door panel with the door shut...then stick my arm behind metal door frame to find the rod that opens the door....Major blood loss and I now know more cuss words than the most seasoned sailor...I even made some up......Door handle needs replacement since that's what broke.....I ended up doing the Saturday job (Line Lock Install) on Sunday....Then the Biondo Body Leak occurs......I have a nice 1981 Vette with all the bells and whistles and it goes very fast....$20,000.00.....and she's gone. :mad :seeya Cappy
Re: Line Lock 1981 Corvette? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
Cappy, if you do decide to get a new line lock, look at the Hurst roll control. It's top quality, but it comes with a $100+ price tag. I have one, and it's installed after the distribution block. The Hurst includes dual inlet and outlet ports, so it will work correctly with your configuration.
Re: Line Lock 1981 Corvette? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
The light should go off once you release your line lock. The only reason it would go on is because the proportioning valve will see that there is full pressure on the front brakes and none on the rear. If you removed the wire on the proportioning valve the light will not come on, but I would just leave the wire connected. You could always get two line locks and put one on each line coming out of the valve and then have them on the same switch if you don't want the light coming on.
Flareside,
Too late.....I already ordered the Jeg's model line lock....and it's on it's way....Wish I'd had known about the two ports in and two out on the Hurst unit....I would have ordered that one.....I thought the higher price was due to the brand name "HURST" on the component.....Maybe I can do line lock on each brake line since according to Olivier....in a couple of days the leak on the Biondo will go away.....Biondo on the right....and the Jeg's on the left...wired to the same button and light...should work????? :seeya Cappy
gkull,
Thanks for the info.....I didn't think we had ABS or split diagonal system....But it's better to post up here and be sure....than find out at the end of a high speed run through the quarter you have two choices..... BAIL or Ride her into the wall of rocks at the end of a very dark track. :seeya Cappy
Alwyn678,
Buy the Hurst model.....at least you'll probably get instructions you can read and a unit that does not leak before it will work.....I hope the Jeg's model is not a Biondo with the Jeg's name pasted on it. :seeya Cappy
