Default 1969 ‘hot’ coil.

So yesterday while idling the new rebuilt engine (350/350), when I turn the ignition key to off, the engine kept running. Nothing like this has occurred in the past and I have run it since the new engine has been in and there has not been a problem. I triple checked the wiring configuration at the starter, and all appears to be correct. However, with the key in the ‘off’ position, I am still getting power to the coil. I am not sure if that is supposed to occur? Additionally, I noticed that the ‘park brake’ light will turn on in the dash with the key off also. Is this an ignition switch problem?

Yes...may need adjustment or replacement. It is down on the column.

Bumping this thread. I replaced the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch. No change. I also noticed that the emergency brake light will appear on the dash even with the key off and out of the cylinder. I read a thread on here and somebody had the same symptoms and changed their starter out and it seemed to correct the problem… However I have a brand new starter. Any other ideas here?

Could you have a crossed wire going to the ignition switch?

I don’t believe so because all that clipped into the ignition switch was two harness plugs with specific patterned prongs.

I know you have answered these before, but let's make sure of the results after changing the switch:
Make sure the ign. key is OFF:
How many wires are connected to the Positive terminal on the coil? ________
Remove the wire(s) from the Positive terminal on the coil and check for voltage.
If there is only 1 wire...what color is it & how much voltage is it showing? ________________
What does the other end of wire 1 connect to? ____________________________________
If there is a 2nd wire........what color is it & how much voltage is it showing? ________________
What does the other end of wire 2 connect to?
(We need to know exactly where the other end of each wire connects.)

Place your voltage meter so you can see it while sitting in the car with the hood open.
WIRE TEST below:
A. Connect the voltmeter to wire 1...
B. Turn the key to ON (do not turn the key all the way to CRANK/START).
C. How much voltage is showing at wire 1 ? _________
D. Now turn the key all the way to CRANK/START.
E. While holding the key in the CRANK/START position how much voltage is showing on wire 1 ?

IF there is/was a 2nd wire connected to the Positive coil terminal...repeat the above TEST on wire 2 and write down the results.

B. _________________
C. _________________*
D. _________________
E. _________________*

Post your results.

It won’t be as bad as dropping the column and tearing apart the steering. Talk to you all tomorrow

So before I could even begin the tests, I jacked up the car again and noticed that two of the terminals on the starter we’re awfully close to each other. This was odd because I had already taken those off and put them back on being careful to keep them separate. It was a real pain but I was able to adjust them and then when I tested the coil it was no longer hot. Thank you so much for the replies

. . .

(don't be shocked if the coil...points...module fails from overheating....at least you will know what to check)
