I doubt it. You can check your oil and see if you lifted a cylinder head or lost a head gasket....other than fluid in your oil you should be okay

you did not do damage. if engine is full of hot coolant the only damage it did was to your sleep. you keep running it until all coolant boils out? now you done damage...

Thanks all (even the comments about the frozen tundra - 90 degrees here in Toronto today) - car started up perfectly today - sounds freaking awesome with the 383 - can't wait to go for a ride later

stop. it got too hot. do not leave the driveway until you have gone over the cooling system and double checked engine timing. post pics of rad, fan, etc.

I disagree - it got too hot because the car was not moving (air blowing through it) and you were holding it at 2k sitting still. A box fan helps, but it can't match the volume of air going by while driving. Not a big deal. Take it for a drive and I'm sure your water temp will be fine.

idling in the driveway is simulating stuck in traffic. without the worry of pushing it to the side and getting towed. if it won't hold temp idling in the driveway wouldn't risk it. that is why i wanna see his fan and shroud.

My mother is 96 and was born in Alberta, my brother in law in British Columbia so light hearted. Jabs at Canadians is just that.

who was idling in a drive way.......no one in this thread. He was breaking in the engine for 20 minutes, then tried to cool it down with a fan and went to move it when it stalled......

I’m glad to hear he got it running long enough to do the break in and I think he shouldn’t worry too much about driving it.

Thanks guys - already been for a short ride - rough acceleration - timing light is at my cottage - would you suggest advancing or retarding?

Set at 10 degrees before TDC but I have a new cam

Is it a rough idle? Do you think it could be an issue with your carburetor?

No carb was recently rebuilt - bogging and sputtering on acceleration - I assume I need to advance it - just want confirmation so I can adjust by hand and then I will take it to my nearby shop so they can fine tune with their light

Just because your carburetor was recently rebuilt doesn’t mean that it was done correctly or that it’s currently set up correctly for your engine. It’s possible that it could be a fuel delivery issue, old gas that you already said was in the tank for nine months or related to timing. I’m just throwing things out there, but considering the problem you had with fuel earlier it’s something to think about.

Gotcha - agreed - the guys that rebuilt are the "go to" for all of the greater Toronto area - my drive today was to get fresh gas in the tank so that should be resolved but will have shop look at carb too

To retarded very little power and runs hot. Too advanced burns pistons. Take something else to the cottage to get the timing light.

Think it was a bit retarded - advanced by ear today and it ran much smoother - temps were fine - think that may been part of the issue for it running hot during break in - at the shop - will let you know their comments
