I have an MSD 8572 distributer. I am wanting to switch to an electric tach. Should I sell this distributer and buy a new one or just use this one without the tach cable? I figure I could get at least $300 for this one then buy a new one. These MSD 8572's go for @$500 new.
I just used the 8572 when I went with an electric tach. I even locked it out with an MSD kit and I am using it locked-out with timing controlled by the EZ-EFI 2.0.
When I went back to using it with the MSD box I ended up removing the tach filter because it would start bouncing above 3500 rpm. Didn't hurt it, but since I removed the tach filter, the tach has been working just fine.
I initially went to an electric tach because I was running my EFI with a GM 730 ECM, with GM distributor, and at that point I was NOT using the MSD box. (I had used it before on my carbed engine).
I only share that because I am not sure what it is you are doing.

Hey thanks. I don't know either. HeHe. I'm a novice mechanic. I currently have this distributer, an MSD 8203 Blaster coil and MSD 6AL box. I bought a FiTech TB FI and will soon be installing it as well as I am wanting to get a Dakota Digital gauge set. I'm going to get the set for the 47 Chevy truck so I can have all my gauges in the 2 large pods in front of me and use the center for radio. I have a mechanic who will help with this. But I would always welcome the experience of other Corvette owners.
I'm going to guess that the FI tech efi requires a locked out distributor to allow it to control timing? If so, then you can get the lockout kit relatively cheap. When I locked mine out I removed the vacuum contraption also.
Take a look at your distributor. I actually wrote to MSD to ask them if my distributor gear was ok to use with the roller cam in the GM RamJet 350 engine....so eyeball that. Mine was ok to use per MSD and it is quite old.

I changed the gear on mine when I converted over to roller. So I have 2 gears with it. summit has a distributer for $190 that one of the reviewers said he locked out for his FiTech.

If you are never going back, ever, then sell it and get another MSD and the lockout kit. I had mine Locked out with the kit, but was still running the mechanical tach in the dash when I was running my Sniper EFI. I have an electric tach I am going to put in this winter but Im not made of cash, so Im just going to take one of the many old tach housings I have, since the chinese cant make a decent cable, and use the end as a cap to keep crap out of it. I wouldnt buy a summit brand distributor since you dont know the manufacturer and if it brakes, you wont be able to get parts, other than sending it back to summit for a replacement. I had a lot of issues with some of their gauges and they finally stopped selling them, so I ponied up the cash for a good brand name and never had another problem.
Holley sells refurbished units all of the time.....on Ebay....I got mine for $209 dollars a couple of years ago.
The non-Ready to Run units are pt#8361.....there are a couple of deals there too...... msd 8361 | eBay
Why is it being mentioned to lock it out....? Do you have EFI? All MSD distributors can be locked at a later date by removing the gear and flipping the advancer 180 degrees.
I have the 8361 in my own engine......one thing about the Ready to Run though.....if your MSD box quits.....you can rewire it on the spot to the internal module, and it will get you down the road.....

The Ready to Run does not need a box. You have a box. If you have a Ready to Run wired to a box and the box quits on the road….you can rewire it in a parking lot to work off the internal module it came with, bypassing the box.
