Keep a basic camera/nothing fancy because it may get oily/greasy/dirty while in use in your car or in your garage so you don't have to search for one when you need it.
When do you need it: Anytime you are going to remove a part from the car that you haven't removed before (it may be a while before you reinstall it)
Take pics before you remove a part/unplug a connector/etc.
If the removal process is the least bit complicated...take pics as you remove-disassemble a component.
Take pics of the area the part is located in and take closeup pics of the component in question/damage..... these pics will help forum members give you better advice.
AND...if you are not sure.....Take A Pic anyway....
