I recently just converted the vet to a tach cable driven hei distributor, and ever since I did that when I try to start it, the starter completely grinds, not letting me start it, seeming like almost jamming itself within the flywheel. Not sure what it is as it has never happens before
If anything I think it has to do with wiring, I ran a completely new wire from IGN on the fuse panel as the power for the hei. I tried to crank it with no power going to the hei and it cranked fine.
From the old coil + side, there was a red wire that went to R on the starter, and a dark one that also went there. Is there something I am missing regarding wiring of these? Because right now they are just taped up.
Thank you for the replies, now since it doesn’t seem to be a wiring issue, what is something else I could check? Because the starter used to never grind/ jam before.
Your starter would be a good place to start, swapping out the Dist has nothing to do with the starter. Pull it and inspect it, might just be the Bendix or bad spot in the flywheel.
Starter looks fine, terminals are secure, and I don’t see any bad spots o the flywheel, it’s definitely been getting worn but still seems to have enough gear left to catch properly on the starter
