I have a 77 with the L82 stock engine that just wiped out the cam & lifter. My question is i have a crane cam& lifter part # 113542 that has been laying around here for a while. The lift is int 491 - exh 497 & duration is 236-244. Will it work without an issue It is a 4 speed with 373 rear
Pretty sure the stock heads will be fine with that. I put 1.6 rockers on mine with the stock cam and heads a few years back with no issues. Pretty close to the same lift then. I'm no longer running stock heads or cam. but I did run this for several years.
You have, maybe 8.5 compression ratio at best. That cam is designed for well over 9.5 C.R. You don't have enough compression.
When a cam starts inching above 480 or so lift, with 280 or so duration, you should have some serious C.R.
If you look at a Magnum cam from Comps with 280 / 480, it states: Must have high compression, tall gears.
Description also states lopey / rough idle.
You can't just slap "lopey in a stocky".
It a nut shell, stock engine, stock compression: it will run like shet.

Way too much cam for a stock, low-compression engine. That will not run well. In your otherwise stock engine, I wouldn't go any bigger than the spces on the XE268 (which was designed as the biggest cam you can run, and have it run well, in that low-comp engine), which is 224/230° .477"/.480". Anything bigger than that in your engine will cause some really lousy performance characteristics.

The stock l82 cam was 222 duration 450/460 lift and 114 lsa. The Comp H268 is close to that but 110 lsa so it will lower the torque curve and add some lope. Summit sells some close to the H268 also but cheaper( Elgin grinds I think). That’s probably a good choice for your combo without swapping heads.
I ran the H268 with 9:1 compression and it was fine.
