Default Temp gauge jump with AC on?

I hardly ever use my air conditioner on my '81. It's over 90, so I flipped it on normal. It works fine, but the temp gage probably jumped 10-15 degrees pretty quickly. Is that normal??

It's about 95 outside. I drove until the temp stabilized around 195 and then switched on the AC at normal and it quickly jumped up to probably 210.

Yes, that actually would be fairly decent at 210 degrees with 95 air temp.

My 78 OEM L-82 4 speed before the rebuild would run 225 normal, no ac, warm outside, and 235-240 with AC on hot humid day. The smog cylinder heads were designed for VERY high water temps to help burn off emissions. The OEM L-82 block rebuilt/upgraded today with AFR aluminum heads, roller cam and 10.2:1 compression never runs temp above 180-185 degrees with the same exact cooling system components.....

Check your grounds! Under dash and at the A/C...which should be grounded to the frame.

The Gauges work backwards so the higher the voltage the LOWER they run.

"Jumped"? It should NOT jump. The temp may slowly creep up but if it "jumped" then you have some sort of electrical issue.

If low speed or idling ….yes….
The condenser is preheating the air to the radiator….

assume cooling system in good shape.

if you want to increase airflow when ac on try this..
