Groaning noise when decelerating - need advice
With the driveshaft out, I held the yoke and tried tightening the nut a smidge. It's on really tight. I didn't want to put more force on it. While I was under there though, I wanted to see if there was any pinion shaft play at the yoke.
I was expecting some in-out play, but instead I found up-down play. Given what I know about these rear ends, It doesn't seem like that would get fixed by tightening the pinion nut more. Any opinions? I hate to say it but I think it might be time to pull it out and ship it to Gary...
I sent it to Bairs, and they found bad pinion bearings, but also worn axle shaft ends. They rebuilt everything, replaced what was worn and set it up for me. I can’t say enough nice things about them. The process was easy and the price was reasonable.
I got it reinstalled a couple weeks ago and was able to take it out a couple times to test. All noises are gone. First time I’ve driven it in 5 years! Glad we had some nice weather down here so I could run it.
I appreciate all the advice provided. You all were correct, it was (mostly) the pinion bearing. Thanks!
