No need for a hatch when you can remove the whole roof:

I've thought about cutting the roof off and making the car a convertible, but it seems the convertible parts are also absurdly expensive.

I could just finish the frame and buy an early body & fuel tank, but I already mediablasted the 1980 body and it's in perfect shape.

Why remove the entire top? There is a mod to install a permanent hardtop coupe to your vert.

The problem is if you are driving and it starts raining you are screwed if you leave the hardtop at home.

Plus I hear it's a bear to get on and off by yourself.

Yes, the one piece hard-top for my 1968 C3 is a beast to move around by your self. It really helps to have a winch mounted on the ceiling to help raise it off the car without scratching the body. My wife and I can put it on and remove it very easily but putting it down is a bugger to keep it from getting scratched up.

We have a 1988 C4 Coupe as well with it's huge back window. That is the toughest car to get a good stereo to work in because of the sounds bouncing around inside the car. The big glass window in the rear lets in a LOT of HEAT which is nice in the winter months and not so nice in July here in the Northern Virginia weather.

One time in the middle of the summer my aftermarket one piece glass Center Roof panel became so hot that it actually became unglued and popped up about 1-2" when I closed the Passengers door. That big window makes the interior very warm during the peak months of summer and that caused the glue to soften holding the glass pane in the frame on top of the car. If I keep the C4 I might try and find a louvered cover for the rear window as this would drop the heat inside the car but leave your rear view nice and clear.

Hello there Hammygoode, I saw your problem and took a look, here is a good alternative for a fraction of the price: http://www.plastics4performance.com/...te-rear-window
This company is located in England and says they ship anywhere in the world. The lexan material they use is 1/2 the weight of glass and much stronger. There were a couple ads on EBAY for the rear glass for a 1982 and the prices started at $895 (U.S. Dollars) plus shipping

By the way, Welcome to the Corvette Forum Hammygoode! This is THE place for Corvette issues and or questions.
