Default 72 Engine hose identification

72 Engine Hose fitting
Can anyone help identify this fitting on the engine? It currently has a hose connected to a canister with the engine side at connected to the bottom an a hose from the top of the canister plugged. I am trying to figure out what it used to be plugged in to. The vette has had a frame off restoration 15 years ago and seen 2 owners since then.

looks like a block drain for the coolant passages. the hose is not supposed to be there, usually a threaded plug.

Are you sure about the restoration? That block looks like it's been through the war if that amount of surface finish degradation has taken place in 15 years.
Can you take a pic of the canister you spoke of in the description?

Canister connected to engine hose
Thanks 67:72. The photo of the engine block was pre restoration but it shows the exact position of the hose connector. The photos I took from under the car were much more difficult to make out. Fortunately the folks who did the restoration took some great pics before during and after which I have from the previous owner.

The photo above shows the canister from the top. The top hose terminates in a plug.

It certainly appears to be tapped into the water passage of the block and of a size just slightly smaller than the heater hose next to it in the pic. I don't know the canister's purpose but can say it's not an original part to the car. There are such things as coolant filters... Is the stock expansion tank fully hooked up?
