I want to upgrade the stereo in my 68 and I was thinking of ordering the "Secretaudio" the radio hideaway solution from Corvette Central.
This way I could keep my stock radio in place for the stock look but have an upgraded radio and be able to play Cd's it has 100 watts of power for the speakers. Anyone have this tuner/amplifier and what do you think of it
Thanks
I priced them a couple of years ago and thought they were too pricey for what you got. I think a better solution is a plain radio/CD player combination that you can put in the storage compartment and control with remote unit. A small infrared sensor placed in an inconspicous place to operate the unit.
I haven't done any extensive investigation but there has to be something out there on the shelf that can be used.
My son is the family car stereo guru and he'll be coming in for Christmas this evening, I'm sure he'll have some suggestion for me to look at.
Thanks Smokehouse69 I'm open to any suggestions. the main things I'm looking for is that it has to be placed out of sight and be able to run a multi disk cd player. To order the Secretaudio I would have to get it from the USA and with exchange, duty, shipping, and brokerage fees I'm looking at between 5 to 6 hundred dollars or more. If your son has any ideas I would be happy to hear them.
I talked to my son and he showed me a few options, some were fairly cost effective. One alternative that seems to be the most straight forward is to mount a quality DIN stereo system along with a changer in the jack storage compartment, and then use a blinker mounted controller. A Sony version of this controller is on this page of the Crutchfield Website
The downside to this is that you won't have any feedback other than actually hearing what's coming out of the speakers (no faceplate to look at.) My son tells me that he knows several people that have remote mounted "hidden" stereo systems and use this method. He said after you set your radio station presets, you can step through them with the controller with no problem. Same thing goes for selecting CD's or CD tracks from your changer.
This is probably what I'll do when I go with a new system in my car.
I installed the unit in my 80bafter seeing it at at show. The system works great, but I could not get rid of the alternator whine. They offered to sell my a filter for $30, but I've had other units in the car with no noise issues at all. I tired filters I had from radio install in other vehicles and dtill no effect.
I gave up and now use the system for sound around the pool. Remote unit and system stays inside house out of the weather.
P.S. The dealer I bought it from in Vegas didn't return emails regarding the noise problem.
I was going to use the system, since I needed the indash space for extra guages.
I'm now installing a graphic equalizer with low level RCA two channel inputs and four channel output through fader control. This will then feed a four channel AMP. I plan on just carrying an MP3 player and just plug it into the low level inputs to the equalizer.
