C3 trans update
L48 = 275ft-lbs @ 4400rpm
2.3L Ecoboost = 350ft-lbs @ 3000rpm. Torque curve of the 2.3L beats the L48 everywhere. Peaks early and stays pretty flat out past 5000rpm.
L86/87 is over 350ft-lbs from around 1300 to 5800rpm and peaks at 440ft-lbs.
Neither of these need the 10-speed close ratio automatic gear boxes they come with to stay within their torque range.
Personally, I don't consider any of the above engines to be torque monsters. The ~800hp turbo LS I was helping my buddy tune last week isn't bad in that regards. Will spins the tires at 3000rpm in 3rd gear just by stepping on the gas, not even to the floor.
