Just about ready to drop the 383 in. Its finally getting ready. I decided for the ease of getting it running I'm gonna use the Q-jet and dist off my old motor (L48)
I know that stuff works and is all plunbed up for fuel lines, vacuum and should help in the initial startup.
What is the Qjet? 650 or 750? and anything should be done for starters? Its dialed in on my old motor so it should fire right up. 10* initial on the dist and it should be good to go. Already been converted to electronic. That will all solve 2 usual start up problems. If it dont light up in 2 cranks I'll be surprised. Any other thoughts? I may keep the Qjet if Lars can fix it up or go with the 750 AFB I got..

Congrats. I'm currently working on 5 speed conversion but that is next in line. What engine did you get?

I was able to score a low milage GM ZZ383 from a guy who swaped for a 427. Pulled the heads, scraped a little carbon, pulled the pan and checked a main and a rod brg and buttoned it back up. Got a Mcloud flywheel and clutch setup and thats it along with some dougs headers and a Pypes 2.5 exhuast system.. Depending how the Muncie likes it I may swap a 5spd in. I think I have the 3.63 rear gear. Should be a stout setup. Fingers crossed

with that steel cam that's OE in ZZ383 ... per GM you'll need a Melonized dist gear (GM pn 10456413 also AC Delco pn 10456413) try your local GM parts dept first.

nearly all Qjet 750 (none smaller) ... IIRC, some on SHP Pontiac etc were about 800-850

gently test fit starter bolts ... there have been some changes ... maybe your newer block, maybe not?

Got the gear, also got the fuel pump bronze tip push rod. 750 Qjet set up right should be enough I think. If not I'll go bigger, but I got the qjet off my old motor for start up.

Best of luck with getting her running real soon! Unfortunately I’m still a long ways off, but maybe with some patience and perseverance, I’ll be joining your ranks before too long, lol.

The Q-Jet can be made to work great......you might need some jetting/rods......
After 400 horsepower or so....the Q-Jet float bowl becomes smallish.....mods are needed to keep a steady stream of fuel in the small bowl.
But for what you are doing.....should work great....
Member here BKbroiler has a Q-jet on a 12 second 383.....it repeats like a computer and he bracket races it.....

I want to use the Qjet because it has all the stuff attached and I know it will work. I have a 750 AFB I may try later and see which one works best. If the Qjet runs good I'll prob just ship it off to Lars for updates.
