Default Fuel Strainer (sock) Filters question

On my '72 454 I had to remove the fuel strainer it was nasty all all the years. I couldn't get one any time soon so I put a Russell filter just past the sending unit ( see photo)
A few years ago I had Lars rebuilt my Rochester Q jet and remember him saying don't use 2 filters....so I removed the one in the Q jet.
My question is is the filter in it's current location fine or should I move it past the pump and closer to the carb? And is it ok running without a strainer? Thanks

Rookie suggestions:
The problem with removing the Qjet filter is....any trash ALREADY in the fuel line goes into the carb and clogs the passages over time.

If you move the Russel filter PAST the fuel pump, there is a good chance the fuel pump will become clogged if the strainer is deteriorating or not installed.

You really need a good strainer to keep the whole fuel system from being clogged.

After you check the base of the carb let us know if it is cracked or warped...make SURE the correct base gasket to match the carb to the manifold is installed.

'If you remove the gas cap, you should see what's inside of the tank with a flash light. If it's clean, then you're OK. If not, then that debris needs to be removed. You might be able to siphon it out without removing the tank.

What micron is that filter? You do not want a fine micron or paper filter on the inlet side ever. Pop the sender out, buy a new sock and o-ring......it will take all of 30 minutes to do this job.
Leave the filter in the Q-Jet.

What Jebby said, the tank filter or sock is a coarse filter, putting a fine filter there makes the pump work harder. Fuel pumps like most pumps prefer to blow than suck.
Hence the filter with the least pressure drop is on the suction side and the finer filter is on the pressure side. The tank sock (coarse filter) is mainly to trap big particles. Putting a fine filter (on the suction side) reduces the pump's output also.

Jebbysan.....the Russell is a 40micron disc element filter..high flow.........yes I agree I'm going to drain the tank and put a new sock on
and then relocate the Russell by the carb....... Thanks!
