After receiving word from Lars in regards to my carb rebuild project, he states that I have indications of timing issues. When I get the carb back, I will need to dial in the timing to try and resolve. That said, what is the common timing setting for a base 73 with auto trans and all stock components?
I've replaced the plugs, wires, coil, and cleaned the points leading up to now.
Side note: I am extremely glad I sent my carb to Lars for the rebuild. Based on the thread he is adding to as the rebuild project continues, it is well worth the cost.
Timing light, rollback
RPM / Dwell meter
Vacuum gauge
You can get a Automotive Multimeter that will do tach and dwell for about $60, timing light for about the same or the InNova 5568 that will do Timing, RPM and Dwell for $126. A good vacuum gauge will run about $25.
To set ignition timing for 'performance' [GM advised to set it for "least warranty cost"], completely disregard "base timing". Ignition timing at idle is merely something that is achieved AFTER the setup for performance. If you need a rough starting point (just because it feels better to have one), set timing at idle with vacuum advance disconnected at 12 degrees BTDC for cylinder #1 on its compression stroke.
But, as other posts have indicated, get the most recent edition of Lars' "Performance Ignition Timing" paper. Read it several times, so that you fully understand the process, then have at it.
