My original 81 does not have it, and it has the ETR stereo. Like I said, it's a production part where it fits multiple cars, and they added the grommet to work on the Vette.
Mine is an 81 and there is a small ground wire that comes off the negative battery cable and is attached to the bulkhead right of above the armrest bracket. There is also a ground wire coming out of the harness that attaches to that same grounding point. I wouldn't cut it if it were mine. In my opinion, the more ground wires the Vette has the better.
This is extraordinarily helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain and provide a pic. I love my corvette and I want everything to be in place as it intended to be. It’s strange that neither the owners manual, the factory service manual or the assembly manual doesn’t have any information on this. All the major corvette parts suppliers imply that this is a factory fit for my 1980 L-82. A negative battery cable with a auxiliary lead. Do you happen to know the purpose of the auxiliary lead is?
My car was previously a NCRS car and so I know the PO had all factory original equipment on it
Like Mrvettenick stated, his 81 did not have one so I agree with him yours did not have one being an 80.. I have also heard from other members that some cars equipped with the ETR radio, also did not have the separate charging wire harness running directly from the alternator to the battery. The only purpose I can see that wire adding, is it adds is a direct ground from the metal bulkhead straight to the negative on the battery. I know there are a few other things that are also attached to that birdcage area and this gives it a direct path to the battery.
Guys, I've had my car since Christ was a Corporal. And I STILL have the factory battery cables. And there still fine! And there is definitely no extra ground wire off the battery cable.

I'm a non believer. My cables are 47 years old and still in good condition. Which is VERY rare. Irregardless of which style battery posts one may have. At the beginning of this thread he shows a battery cable that is over 40 years old that has perished due to the green monster that affects most all battery cables in time.
40 years is a damn good run on a battery cable.
I'm so sorry you hate side post battery's so much. Why don't you buy a Ford??
That corrosion on his cable is at the frame end.
So I do not see how it can possibly have anything to do with a side post battery.
Notice how twisted it is, at the frame connection, even bent / cut, that's just unecessary roughness and strain by some installer.....
Then water and/or road salt got inside the sheath....
Sorry just because your a non believer doesn't mean it doesn't happen.liquids run down hill it's called gravity, just something else I believe in.
And actually I do own a Ford also And they have their issues too..
