I've been working on getting my AC working after many years and I found that the high side schrader valve isn't holding pressure. It starts leaking as soon as i remove the AC manifold connector. I used a valve core removal tool and pulled it out, which was harder than expected. However, the new schrader valve, doesn't fit, it's too big. Are the old R12 schrader valves smaller than the new R134 style? I can't find any online that look like the one I pulled out. Anyone had experience with this?
Those schrader valves don't usually need replacing just tightening or some small bit of contamination got stuck. remove, clean, and reinstall. I'm not aware of it if they are different sizes.
Cores are different. I found these 2 images on separate websites..... they pretty much agree that the valve cores are different between R-12 and R-134a.

pic?
my 79 r12 high side is a weird size to put r12 gauges on as you need an adapter…it is potentially a weird size
Looks like the R12 core is the same as any tire shrader valve core. Use one of those if you want, or not. The pressure and temp on the high side may exceed the material limits used in a tire schrader valve. don't know for sure.
This kit is cheap. And confirms they are different from r12 to 134a. of course you only need one.
