Alright so I'm having trouble with this engine, I was told this was a 69 427 but I have my suspicions. 3963512 is the casting number. D5 is all I see of the date code. I will post pics also. Any help is appreciated
Well, it's definitely been decked. I'm wondering about the stamping: not sure about "CB" but it could indicate 454 and .060 overbore with a 2-bolt mains. The block #3963512 was used for both 427 and 454.
Does it have a harmonic damper on it? The 454 engine is externally balanced with a weighted damper while the 427 is internally balanced. I don't recall if the rear crank flange has any casting #s in it but might. A for sure test is to remove a head and measure the bore and stroke.

The flexplate will also have a weight if 454 and none if a 427.
Ok so I looked for a date code above the starter and there was no numbers, only what looks to be a "shift indicator"casting. I also looked at the harmonic balancer that was with the engine but it wasn't on the engine, possibly wrong one but Idk. It did have the counter weight but I didn't see anything on the flywheel/flexplate. I guess I'll pull the pan and check the crankshaft numbers.

I think your right and CB is the initials of the builder or company.

I actually thought the same thing myself but was just making sure there wasn't something I was missing. I was hoping it was a super rare engine that was worth about 10 grand 😆. On a serious note, I have never owned a big block before so I really wanted some other opinions on it. It's kind of a long story but I payed for it before seeing it and was told it was a 69 427 and that's what I wanted. I don't know what I'll do or how I'll handle the situation, but I definitely don't like being lied to. It was an expensive lesson learned I guess
Post pics of balancer and starter wheel. Pull the pan and post pics of crank, rods and casting number on crank. There are 69 427’s that are worth no more than a 77 pick up truck 454 and there are also ones that are priceless…

That'll be my next move, I just have to get it on a stand. I've been swamped here lately but when I do, I'll definitely post pics
The only way you'll know for sure what it is is to see what crank is in it. While not super common there are 454s out there that have been internally balanced after a rebuild so balancer/flywheel combo isn't a 100% sure thing.
The 454's I've had had recesses at the bottom of the bore to clear the connecting rods. I never noticed if 396's and 427's had this factory clearancing.

the "512" block was clearanced in anticipation of the 454.

It lookalikeits out of the car...fliip it over and pull the pan. Check out the crank numers. Thats the only way to truly tell. Ive seen parts listed for nuetral balanced 454 parts recently so you are better off looking inside. It will also give you a chance to check out the bearings if its new to you as you should anyway.
