It wasnt a thing were I live, at least not widely sold or used in the quantities were it damaged rubber and carbs...
In 94 I lived in the Chicago area and it was pretty common. Didn’t realize it wasn’t that way elsewhere until a decade later.

You ever see an old gas pump with “Ethyl” on it?

sure. Ethyl is short for octane booster tetraethyl lead aka TEL; no relationship with either ethanol or gasohol.
Was made by Ethyl Corporation; initially a GM subsidiary.
TEL was replaced by MTBE.
MTBE has since been banned throughout US) and MTBE replaced by modern ethanol production capacity and local blending capabilities.

Old, tired (and retired) locker room humor: Nor is Ethyl the gal Gomer was last seen pumping at Wally's.

Welcome to the forum! I let mine sit for a few years too, fuel was same as you found in your car, and that's not so bad to deal with. The biggest problem I had was the corroded gas tank, I had no choice but to replace the tank and sending unit. Do yourself a favor and take a good look at the inside of the tank.
