For 53-62, there was no factory power steering. Beginning in 63, power steering became an option. For the 1977 model year, power steering became standard equipment..
I tried to drive a 1969 C3 with manual steering and that was a serious challenge to the old Biceps. If you are not moving it is very hard to move the steering wheel at slow speeds. My cousin bought it and gave it to his wife who rejected it because of the lack of power steering. It was the first time I ever saw a person reject a Corvette being "given" to them. The C3 was Perfect but had no Power steering and that was enough for his beautiful wife not to want to drive it, AT ALL. Silly Woman..
I converted my 77 from power steering and brakes to manual steering and brakes........the steering now drives like a sports car, excellent road feel and no slop. Steering in a parking lot takes nothing more than making turns while in motion. Above 10 mph, it steers with very little effort. The bonus to both is simplicity. No power steering pumps, fluids, etc. The manual brakes work exactly as well as power brakes, it just takes a slight more leg pressure. The effective braking is exactly the same.
I have driven my MANUAL STEERING, NON-POWER BRAKES, 4 speed MANUAL '69 STINGRAY for 45 years. Radio delete, heater delete, delete delete, delete.
1. You do know that there are two settings for the tie rod ends, SLOW and EASIER and FAST(er) and HARDER.
2. As Flyboy said once you are ACTUALLY MOVING the steering in a manual car is is no big deal. Even with 'oversize' tires.
3. I'm amused at the hue and cry over the years about how the C-3 became " too cushy" and "It's not a sportscar, because of all the power accessories"....Well here it is PURE and ELEMENTAL with the most direct coupling between YOU and the Road.
4. If the little woman complains that 'she can't drive it' because of the lack of power steering, BE HAPPY!....They make Camry's and PRIUS's just for that reason!
