Yet another coolant capacity thread... But I haven't found the answer by searching.
1975 L48
I need to know how much coolant the engine block alone takes. I want to treat the engine block with oxalic acid to remove any rust and I want to cap off all passages to radiator and heater core so that I treat the engine block only.
What would the oxalic acid do to the radiator & heater core?
Nothing because they are probably brass or copper. Aluminum on the other hand is somewhat affected by oxalic acid. It's more a matter of not waisting unnecessary amounts of it.
courtesy of CF member noonie ... I have relied upon the following several times and IT WORKS.
Unless a component is already so weak/worn that it's nearly scrap; it won't hurt it.

Dunno block capacity. I've always done with engine running. The heat is an important part in driving the chemical reaction. The circulating/pumping action is as well.
Prestone used to make a cleaner for GM P/N 12346500. It was also sold under Prestone P/N AS100 Heavy Duty Cooling System Cleaner Here is the GM TSB and Instructions #99-06-02-012D (Online or at a GM dealer) It is not made anymore but these are the components. 9 dry oz of Oxalic Acid (DAP Wood Bleach) 2 dry oz of Sodium Carbonate (Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda)
-add-
FWIW above TSB covers vehicles with aluminum radiator and heater core.

I might as well fill the complete system and run the car for a day to help the chemicals work. Oxalic acid isn't particularly expensive. Thanks for your input!

I just used the prestone stuff and added it and drove for a couple of days, completely drained and refilled and ran the prestone again. THen on the third lap I just ran straigght water and then kept flushing it until it was clear. THen took the radiator out and back flushed that until it was clear..... Refilled everything with premix 50-50 and every time I drain the block after that it was as green as the day it went in...
i don't like to mess with block drain plugs. too small a thread. too old. iron-to-steel. too much chance of having to fix a pipe thread on your back under the car.
SAme here. Pull the T stat pour your sauce in and get it nice and hot...the open the pitcock, as it drains out keep adding water til youre happy. Reinstall Tstat and motor on
Good enough for me
you can get fancy by removing water pump and making a small hose end for a wet vac. stick it in there and down to bottom of block and suck both sides dry.
