I am in the process of restoring the rear end on my 82 and I may have made a mistake. I've had the diff back in for about a month while I rebuilt the trailing arms. I was about to start putting stuff back together but I noticed the bottom of the diff was wet with diff fluid. I used the gasket that came with the Ecklers diff fluid kit with just gasket adhesive. Did I my mess up using that? I snugged up the bolts and I am hoping for a miracle!
If I do redo this, assuming I remove the spare tire shield, is it possible to just remove the batwing? I really don't want to have to drop the entire diff again.
Gasket & RTV is all you need. The aluminum diff may expand more with heat but correctly installed shouldn't be a problem. If you snug up the bolts and the leak stops I would use some Nord Lock washers with the bolts. If it still leaks you will have to remove the diff to replace the gasket safely.
