So I got my 396 all apart. The camshaft that was I. It has the groove in the back of the camshaft. From my research this was only for early 396 engines. Starting in 67-68 they changed to a normal cam that didn’t have this groove.
move confirmed that my block is a 68’. And someone has been in this motor before as the rods are stamped/numbered.
im assuming that this may have caused issues with oil pressure in this motor. Take a look at the back near the distributor gear.
i don't believe that groove will cause oil pressure issues. but now is the best time to pick the cam you want since it is out. so do some homework. two words... roller conversion! the cam itself could be a piece a numbers type guy could want. don't chuck it until you figure out what it is.
